Unpacking Our Faith: Why Do We Celebrate Mass? Discovering Its Power and Purpose (Week 6)

by Rev. Emmanuel I. Ihemedu  |  12/29/2024  |  Live the Liturgy

Why Do We Sing “Holy, Holy, Holy”? The Sanctus (Latin for "Holy") is our first communal praise to God the Father in the Eucharistic Prayer. Every time we sing the Sanctus, the entire Church of God unites in worship:

  • The faithful on earth,
  • The souls in purgatory,
  • And the saints in heaven join together in praise of God.

Scriptural Origins of the Sanctus

The words of the Sanctus originate from the Book of Isaiah. In a vision, Isaiah saw the Lord seated on His throne while angels cried out: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts!” (Isaiah 6:3). This acclamation also became part of Jewish morning prayers.

The New Testament added: “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord” (Matthew 21:9; Luke 19:38). These words echo the joyful praise of the disciples as Jesus entered Jerusalem, culminating in the triumphant “Hosanna in the highest.”

Participating in the Sanctus

When we sing the Sanctus, it is not a time to be passive spectators. Unfortunately, some stand idly, chew gum, or seem disengaged. This sacred moment calls for the entire Body of Christ to unite with the Church in heaven, on earth, and in purgatory, praising our God.

The worship aids provided are there to help you fully participate in this act of praise. On this Sunday, let us join our voices in the Sanctus, glorifying God with all creation!
